Left in an isolation cell in the notorious police quarters at Møllergata 19, the Norwegian resistance fighter Petter Moen uses the few things at his disposal to try make sense of his despair and what is happening to him. Letters, words, sentences slowly emerge by meticulously pricking toilet paper sheets with a found pin. He numbers and rolls the thin sheets to finally drop them down the prison´s ventilation shafts.

Petter Moen´s Diary, based on the recovered notes, is but one of many private diaries relaying the atrocious impacts of war and occupation on countless individual fates.

A diligent translation of the diary into German is provided by Gisela Schneemann.

In addition to constituting a contemporary historical document, the texts provide a fragmentary insight into a pained world of thought, which the author hardly intended to be dragged out into the light.

Its fragmentary debris in the form of diary pages and the prison cell reconstructed at Norway´s Resistance Museum have been taken on by the Austrian architect Dorina Dobnig.

Her project “Dagboken / The Diary” explores the notion of the building as a witness of a forcibly bared personal world of hope and hopelessness, self-scrutiny and escalating claustrophobia. The video installation, featuring dancer Kristian Alm accompanied by an acoustic composition by Gerald Krist, employs the body, its distorted movement and repetitive gestures devoid of meaning, as a tool for mapping the prisoner´s physical confinement.

“Dagboken / The Diary” is shown as part of the exhibition at Norway´s Resistance Museum in the same period that is covered in Petter Moen´s diary, February 10 to September 4.

The installation opens on Saturday, Feb 11, 2012, 12:00 at Norway´s Resistance Museum (Norges Hjemmefrontmuseum), building 21, Akershus Fortress, Oslo.

A series of photographs from back in the day when owning a car was a luxury associated with certain obligations to style.

In response to the growing number of private cars in the inner city and the ensuing shortage of parking space, the first underground parking garage in Vienna, the Votivgarage, was opened in 1960. The prestigious project in the spirit of modernism featured drive-in banking, an underground bar and restaurant and hostesses on roller skates in red uniforms showing patrons to their parking spot.

Les UX or Urban eXperiment is an underground organisation restoring or improving the city of Paris in secret, through repurposing hidden places, setting up pirate movie theatres and “shocking acts of cultural preservation and repair”.

Evolving from a group of teenagers dedicated to urban exploration of the hidden features of Paris since the early eighties, one of the sensational feats of UX´s subgroup Untergunther, specifically dedicated to restoration was the clandestine restoration of the Panthéon´s 19^th century clock.

The Panthéon´s administration´s immediate reaction was to bring charges against the group.

“Eight restorers built their own secret workshop in a storeroom, which they wired for electricity and Internet access and outfitted with armchairs, tools, a fridge, and a hot plate. Goli Otok- an abandoned prison island in the Adriatic

Between the Croatian tourist islands of Rab and Krk , in the Adriatic sea lies a barren island, two by two kilometers in size, with strange ruins of prisons, bunkers and industrial sites.

Until the fall of communism Goli Otok, "the naked island" was a taboo in former Yugoslavia.

Today the island´s history is still an uncomfortable topic for many.

Austrian journalist Reinhard Grabner and camera man Franz Schwaighofer have now produced the first film about the island: "Strahota- Die Geschichte der Gefängnisinsel Goli Otok".

In 1949, the entire island was officially made into a high-security, top secret prison and labor camp run by the authorities of SFR Yugoslavia.

Goli Otok "was the private concentration camp of the Communist Party, more specifically: of Marshall Tito" says a former inmate, one of the contemporary witnesses interviewed for the film. Starting in 1948 critics not conforming to the system and political prisoners were confined to the island and subjected to forced heavy labor and tortorous abuse.

From the mid-60ies when also convicted criminals were imprisoned on the island "the prison situation normalised".

Over the course of four decades, apart from cell tracts and living quarters for the guards, the forced labour of the prisoners built a whole industrial zone, a number of factories for the production of furniture and tiles, even a pig farm that supplied the surrounding tourist islands. Former prisoners interviewed in the film tell about torture and abuse, and compare the conditions and the treatment with Guantánamo.

The island was eventually evacuated in 1988, leaving the facilities to decay.

"Strahota - Die Geschichte der Gefängnisinsel Goli Otok" premiered on May 5 2009.

A Croatian version is in the making. Alfred Pal, a former prisoner of Goli Otok plans to open an exhibition in Zagreb in July 2009.

Who decides what should be regarded as heritage? Dorina Dobnig, an MSc Sustainable Heritage student, discusses a guest lecture given by Peter Davis (Professor of Museology at the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies at the University of Newcastle) on the concept of the ecomuseum.

Professor Peter Davis presented his lecture ‘Communities, Ecomuseums and Sustainability’ to a mixed audience of students, academics and members of the museum and heritage professions at the UCL Institute of Archaeology on 20 January.

The concept of the ecomuseum or ‘ecomusée’ was developed in France by George Henri Rivière and Hugues de Varine as a reaction to traditional museum concepts.

Ecomuseums are community-based heritage projects that support sustainable development – a counterbalance to ‘top-down’ institutional approaches to communities that democratises the operative structures of cultural heritage interpretation and challenges the spatially bound traditional museum models.

In his lecture, Davis elaborated on ecomuseums as both mechanism and process, and the significance of their characteristics specifically in relation to the empowerment of local communities, who can make their own decisions about what constitutes their heritage and the creation of different forms of capital, cultural and otherwise.

As such, no single authoritative model for ecomuseums exists. Rather, the ecomuseum is what Davis calls a “toolkit of heritage practices” that may be adapted to the heritage of specific territories not necessarily defined by conventional boundaries, but instead, for example, by a common landscape, dialect, industry or musical tradition.

Local communities are at the heart of the ecomuseum philosophy and Professor Davis demonstrated its application in a deliberately broad scope of case studies, openly discussing the varied results and impacts on the respective communities, their identity and the challenges in sustaining community-supported ecomuseum practices in the longer term.

Among the wide range of eco-museums discussed were the Ecomuseo de Canapa, Carmagnola in Piemonte, Italy; Kalyna Country, the “world´s largest ecomuseum” for Ukrainian culture in Canada; the Japanese ecomuseums of Asahi-machi, Yamagata and Hirano-cho, Osaka as well as a group of Chinese ecomuseums initiated by a Sino-Norwegian cooperation project.

In his analysis of differing approaches to balancing visitor and community interests, cultural tourism, fragmentation of sites and content, community involvement, and the degree to which ‘heritage professionals’ and financing authorities influence the process in the specific countries, Davis assessed the wide-ranging applicability of the ecomuseum model as a highly flexible framework based on a holistic understanding of the history of a place.

Professor Davis’s book Ecomuseums: A Sense of Place will be published in a revised second edition in March 2011.

This article (via BoingBoing) gives background on an impending official ban by China´s General Bureau of Radio, Film and Television on the production of a genre that has increased in popularity recently: time-travel .
In these fictions the main characters find themselves transported from the contemporary to an era of China´s historical grandeur.
A nostalgia for such imagined pasts is perceived as reactionary and disrespective of history by the authorities.

China´s cultural infrastructures are under vigorous development- but what concepts of heritage and culture does the Chinese state want to establish and support?

"China´s New Age of Enlightenment" - from an article in the Art Newspaper:

"As of 2009 there were 3,020 museums in China, including 328 private museums (the American Association of Museums estimates 17,500 in the US). One hundred new museums are being added each year. In March the government made entry to museums of modern and contemporary art free. The torrid pace of museum development is part of a national drive to build cultural infrastructure and, as Cai Wu, the minister of culture, put it earlier this year in a published comment, “to establish a batch of world-famous cultural brands.”

“The next ten years should be a golden period for the development of every aspect of cultural industries in China,” said Ye Lang. “The country isn’t just satisfied with the economic achievements it had made,” the Xinhua news agency announced in January. “What it now needs is all-round cultural influence on an international scale.” The government backs these ambitions with a cultural outlay of $4.45bn in 2009, excluding construction costs."

Hypothetical adaptive re-use

Artist collective the Hypothetical Development Organisation, "dedicated to the recognition and extension of a new form of urban storytelling", has developed alternative perspectives towards the re-use of abandoned structures. Ten abandoned buildings in New Orleans were given hypothetical futures, "not bound by rules relating to commercial potential, practical materials, or physics". In accordance to their motto, "You won´t believe our plans!", among the suggested developments have been a Loitering Centre, a Rubble Depot and an Authenticity Monument of a building in disrepair, to be conserved "as found".

After Grizzly Man, the 30,000 year old cave art paintings at Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc in Southern France are next to undergo the Werner Herzog treatment. The German director and his team have gained exclusive access to the cave and the oldest cave paintings ever to have been found- the site is not accessible to the general public for conservation issues. "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" will be Herzog´s first documentary filmed in 3D and is to be released in April 2011.

In the meantime, we can enjoy a virtual tour of the caves at Chauvet and Lascaux.

The Beatles: Abbey Road 1969 LP cover

The iconic LP cover photo of The Beatles crossing Abbey Road is more than 40 years old. The original zebra crossing has been moved several feet 30 years ago and may be reconstructed.

The street crossing, popularly used by fans re-enacting the shoot is to be grade II listed along Abbey Road studios for its cultural and historical importance, following recommendations by English Heritage in an effort to recognize more popular and recent sites as heritage material.

Save Britain´s Heritage criticizes EH for this ostentatiously middle-brow decision while neglecting Ringo Starr´s birth place, Madryn Street, which is often referred to in his music and part of an area scheduled for demolition under the Pathfinder scheme.

Meanwhile the listing of the site of another iconic LP cover image in recognition of its importance in music history seems more unlikely.

Restoration of the material fabric of the now reconstructed Fantoft stave church to the period of its greatest cultural influence would infer its reconstruction as a ruin of smouldering cinders.

The burning of Fantoft stave church on June 6, 1992 was the beginning of a series of arsonist attacks on more than 50 church buildings by persons associated to the Black Metal scene in Norway.

Many of the targeted structures were historical churches constructed in tarred timber. To great public outrage these heritage buildings were singled for arson attacks out as symbols of the subjugation through christianization of a pagan Viking Norway. In the same way as the remains of ship burials discovered in Viking grave mounds, stave churches were instrumentalized during the nation building process after the secession from Sweden and reinforced as physical symbols of a shared Norwegian cultural heritage.

Varg Vikernes of the band Burzum, marked out as "the most notorious metal musician of all time" was a suspect in the burning and is rumored to have taken the photograph of the burnt out ruins for the LP cover himself. Heeding his self-created image, he went on to murder fellow musician Øystein Aarseth and embrace a cornucopia of fascist ideologies during his imprisonment. (cf Goodricke-Clarke, N. 2003. Changing market forces influence the conservation and deterioration of heritage objects in a multitude of ways. The official market is shadowed by its underground double- historic materials are subject to organised theft by gangs. Harnessing their material and contextual value, heritage assemblies are deconstructed and their parts sold to the highest bidder. The components are then either up-cycled or re-cycled: amalgated into new creations that cash in on reminiscing the past or harvested for their material value and maybe reused as building material in oversea countries experiencing a shortage of raw material supply.

The steep increase in prices paid for lead makes the roofs of listed churches a target. Metal thiefs are said to conventiently locate lucrative targets with the help of Google Earth. 2009 was the Norwegian Year of Cultural Heritage, as designated by the Norwegian government in its white paper “Living with Our Cultural Heritage”.

Its main theme, “Cultural Heritage in Everyday Life” encouraged the democratisation and popularisation of a recurrently elitist pursuit.

The Directorate for Cultural Heritage in Norway (Riskantikvaren) marked the year by listing twelve objects that would specifically represent communal values and experiences. Among the usual suspects relating to small town and rural culture such as kiosks and milk collection points, there is the more uncommon object of a public urinal.

The urinal in Stensparken, designed as a piece of street furniture by one of Oslo´s municipal architects, has aesthetic and historic value as a representative example of 1930s Scandinavian functionalism and urban sanitation.

Its distinctive appearance gained it a number of monikers such as “The Mushroom”, “The Umbrella”.

However, of greater interest and major influence to the decision of Riksantikvaren to list this particular structure are the nontangible values reflected in the colloquial name of the locale as “Love´s Merry-go-round”: the urinal was a popular and well frequented meeting place for Oslo´s gay community during a time when homosexuality was afflicted with serious social stigma.

Kabelbrand

Max Brand (1886-1980) was an Austrian composer and pioneer of synthesizer and electronic music. The moogtonium or Max Brand synthesizer is an early synthesizer prototype built by Bob Moog between 1967-60 for the exiled composer in New York. The rare synthesizer prototype was Moog´s interpretation of a trautonium.

The moogtonium was one of the main exhibits in the 2008 show Zauberhafte Klangmaschinen / Magical Sound Machines on the histories of sound generator, sound recorders and sound transmitters at the Kulturfabrik Hainburg (a repurposed tobacco factory), curated by IMA, the Institute of Media Archeology.

The instrument is part of the Max Brand archive.

Watch it being played live at the Ars Electronica (festival for arts, technology and society held in Linz, Austria) by Clemens Hausch and Gerald Krist. Burning the roots of Western Culture

"City on fire - burning the roots of Western culture" is a series of site specific monumental video installations created by the artistic collaboration of Thyra Hilden and Pio Diaz. The true to scale video illusions are projected on monuments and buildings, making them appear in fiery blazes.

To underscore a neglection of the transitory aspect of buildings and man-made monuments as expressions of western self-understanding and identity in a symbolic act of non-destructive cultural aggression, the artists pick sites that have become part of the canon of physical manifestations of western culture.

This weekend (Sept 17-19, 2010) it is the Coliseum in Rome, the axiomatically accepted cradle of European culture, that is scheduled to go up in flames.

Other locations have included Scandinavia´s biggest museum, the ARos Museum of Art in Århus, Denmark, the churches Vor Frue Cathedral in Copenhagen and St.Katharinenkirche in Frankfurt, Germany, the iconic Trevi fountain and a library for Classical Studies in Rome.

Hausmania is a selv-governed cultural complex in Oslo, Norway that evolved out of a block of houses in classic turn-of-the-century style taken over by squatters and underground art collectives.

In the summer of 2010 the local authorities have claimed back and seized one of the squatted buildings.

To prevent an imminent re-occupation by the squatters all apertures that would facilitate access to the building were closed off. The created effect is a a cenotaph for the Hausmania movement, a hermetically sealed block of concrete, reminiscing of a cross between James Turrell Mendota Hotel and Rachel Whiteread´s House.

After the nuclear testing is over the dilemma arises on how to clean up any highly toxic radioactive leftovers. In a large scale equivalent of brushing things under the carpet, contaminated soil has been filled into a crater conventiently created by another nuclear test, before slapping a giant concrete lid on top.

The US Department of Energy aims to successfully clean all sites presently contaminated by "millions of gallons of radioactive waste", "thousands of tons of spent nuclear fuel and material" and "huge quantities of contaminated soil and water" by 2025. The United States has at least 108 sites designated as areas that are contaminated and unusable.

The longterm toxicity of radioactively contaminated material raises the strange moral issue on how to communicate the danger of contaminated sites to future generations that may have developed a different understanding of how to interpret a warning visual.
The planners of today have to imagine tactics to create a deterring genius loci for these modern cult sites of invisible danger and dread to keep the location and its physical contents taboo for the next thousands of years, resulting in the conceptualisation of markers and perimeter monuments and the development of an elaborate warning system by a conclave of scientists, linguists, anthropologists and sci-fi thinkers assembled by the US Department of Energy.

Hinterbrühl - the grotto and its suppressed past as a concentration camp

Hinterbrühl in southern Lower Austria is the site of the largest
subterranean lake in Europe. It was also a satellite camp of the
Mauthausen KZ and housed a gigantic underground war factory.
In 1912 a botched underground blasting operation of the local gypsum
mine caused 20 million litres of water to gush forth from behind the
rock, flooding the lower level galleries and adits, putting a definite
stop to production.

The lake, result of the flooding of a subsequently abandonded mine is described as a "natural monument" on the website (definition of natural monument).

The mine remained closed for years, but gained public interest in
1932, when it opened as a tourist attraction after an international
team of cave explores ventured to make it accessible to the general
public as a show mine.

The 'Seegrotte Hinterbrühl' has been visited by more than 10 million
people. It boasts 'Austria's first Barbara-Museum', venerating St.
Barbara, the patron saint of miners. It was one of the film locations
of Disney's "The three Musketeers" (1993).
Tours are held everyday in several languages and include a 'romantic motor boat trip on the largest subterranean lake of Europe' – if navigating through a flooded former weapons factory/work camp, between the plastic waterlilies, past grotto walls lit in garishly bright colours and a pimped out gondola well fit for Lohengrin is your idea of romance, that is.

The 'Great Lake', 60 meter underground after passing a labyrinth of tunnels and halls, has a water surface area of approx. 6200m2, and an average depth of 1.20m with the deepest point being a 12m shaft. The lake is fed by seven subterranean springs, but has no natural drain. Each night 50-60 000 liters of water are pumped to keep waterlevels at 1.20m.

The subterranean location protected against targeted bomb raids and was consequently requisitioned for the Nationalsocialist wareffort. Under the codename "Languste" the German 'Heinkel Werke' operated an underground aircraft factory deep in the tunnels and adits that were kept dry by continous pumping.
One of many satellite camps of Mauthausen concentration camp was opened in the caverns. At first 800, then 1800 forced labourers and prisoners slaved away in 24-hour shifts, producing parts for the Me 262 jet fighter aka Schwalbe and the 'Heinkel HE 162 Salamander' akaVolksjäger, one of the first jet fighters and also one of the secret weapons of the Luftwaffe.

The camp was dissolved in the last days of the war. Seven bombs were intentionally set off inside the mine, destroying the interior.
The 1800 prisoners of the camp were sent on a death march back to Mauthausen, only few survived.
About 50 prisoners remaining in the camp's hospital ward were killed by an injection of petrol because of their inability to walk.

Goli Otok - an abandonded prison island in the Adriatic

Between the Croatian tourist islands of Rab and Krk , in the Adriatic sea lies a barren island, two by two kilometers in size, with strange ruins of prisons, bunkers and industrial sites.
Until the fall of communism Goli Otok, "the naked island" was a taboo in former Yugoslavia.
Today the island´s history is still an uncomfortable topic for many.
Austrian journalist Reinhard Grabner and camera man Franz Schwaighofer have now produced the first film about the island: "Strahota- Die Geschichte der Gefängnisinsel Goli Otok".
In 1949, the entire island was officially made into a high-security, top secret prison and labor camp run by the authorities of SFR Yugoslavia.

Goli Otok "was the private concentration camp of the Communist Party, more specifically: of Marshall Tito" says a former inmate, one of the contemporary witnesses interviewed for the film. Starting in 1948 critics not conforming to the system and political prisoners were confined to the island and subjected to forced heavy labor and tortorous abuse.
From the mid-60ies when also convicted criminals were imprisoned on the island "the prison situation normalised".

Over the course of four decades, apart from cell tracts and living quarters for the guards, the forced labour of the prisoners built a whole industrial zone, a number of factories for the production of furniture and tiles, even a pig farm that supplied the surrounding tourist islands. Former prisoners interviewed in the film tell about torture and abuse, and compare the conditions and the treatment with Guantánamo.
The island was eventually evacuated in 1988, leaving the facilities to decay.
"Strahota - Die Geschichte der Gefängnisinsel Goli Otok" premiered on May 5 2009.
A Croatian version is in the making. Alfred Pal, a former prisoner of Goli Otok plans to open an exhibition in Zagreb in July 2009.

The electro-acoustic noise band "Einstürzende Neubauten" wrote this lament as a response to Berlin´s urban renewal projects initiated after the fall of the Berlin wall to heal or cover over the rift in the fabric of a divided city.

Across the scarfaced terrain, slowly disappearing, only phantom pain remains scarcely audible foul laughter seeps out of the red Info Box. In the graves there is quiet turning. Nothing but future ruins, material for the next layer, Melancholia, mon cher, floating over the new city and over the land. Over the control centres, over the stubbly fields of concrete, over the secret net of bunkers, that refuses to be wiped out. Marlene go home! Over the Marlene-Dietrich-Platz. The new temples are already cracked, future ruins, one day grass will also grow over the city, over its last layer. Melancholia, mon cher, floats over the new city over the land. In the lacerated skies, ploughed to bits by the jets` manoeuvers, she hangs with wide spread wings, sleep less and with frozen gaze, pointing at rubble, behind her the future piling up. Slowly rising higher and higher, at last she surveys the entire land. What is the lay of the land?
